IHC suspends notification of Abrar ul Haq’s appointment as PRCS chairman
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday suspended the notification appointing pop singer and philanthropist Abrarul Haq as chairman of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS). The singer was appointed as the PRCS chairman through an executive order of President Arif Alvi after removing incumbent chairman Dr. Saeed Elahi who was accused of criticizing government policies, corruption, and nepotism during his two tenures. The petitioner argued that according to the managing body’s rules, the duration of the tenure is three years and there is no method of removing the chairman. Citing 10-A of the rule book, the court questioned the removal of chairman from AGP Khan. “The government’s executive branch has the authority to remove the chairman any time,” the attorney general responded. Justice Minallah questioned, “How the government could remove the chairman despite rule being present?” The court served notices to AGP, establishment division, Abrar ul Haq and asked them to submit a response.
